Fall 2009: Celebrated Abraham Lincoln and the Bicentennial
with

Four Big Events!

Tue., October 20, 2009 -- Drs. Wanda Cheek, Anne Marshall, and Martha Swain discussed Mrs. Lincoln and her Time at the Sportsplex Meeting Room 1 at 7:00 p.m.

Tue., November 3, 2009 -- Drs. Bill Parrish, John Marszalek, Michael Ballard, and Duffy Neubauer discussed Abraham Lincoln Revisited at the Sportsplex Meeting Room 1 at 7:00 p.m.

Thur., November 12 at 6:30 p.m. George Buss (see above photo) came to Starkville as Abraham Lincoln. Everyone was invited to the Starkville High School Theater. The free and open to the public program was co-sponsored by the Starkville School District.

Mon. November 30 at Barnes and Noble at 5:30 p.m. Dr. Clyde Williams led a discussion on the book Abraham Lincoln by James McPherson.

Plus---Fri. November 13, 2009--George Buss appeared at Armstrong Middle School and Starkville High School as Abraham Lincoln for students.

Starkville Reads Picks Fall Reads: DONATES LINCOLN BOOKS TO LIBRARIES by Harry Freeman

Starkville Reads has chosen Abraham Lincoln by James McPherson and Mrs. Lincoln: A Life by Catherine Clinton as the featured books for the One Book, One Community fall program. The books were chosen in part to tie Starkville Reads' program with the Lincoln Bicentennial, a national celebration of the 200th anniversary of the birth of Lincoln in 1809. Planning for a program of November events related to the books, to the Civil War period, and to the celebration of Lincoln's life is underway. (See dates above)

The McPherson book is a short. 65 page summary of Lincoln's life. About the book, David Herbert Donald, the Pulitzer Prize winning author of a classic Lincoln biography, wrote, "James McPherson's Abraham Lincoln is a gem. This is the very best biography of our sixteenth president ever written." About Mrs. Lincoln: A Life, Doris Kearns Goodwin wrote, " In this remarkable book, Catherine Clinton displays an emotional depth in her understanding of Mary Lincoln that has rarely been revealed in the Lincoln literature. This engaging, wonderfully written narrative provides fresh insight into this complex woman, whose intelligence and loving capacities were continually beset by insecurities. It is a triumph."

Every Starkville area reader is encouraged to read these books and participate in the planned discussions and events. Starkville Reads has provided extra copies of the books to the public library and the to the libraries at Armstrong Middle School and Starkville High School. We thank Starkville/ Oktibbeha Achieving Results ( SOAR) for the grant that partially supports our purchase of books. Mrs. Lincoln: A Life was chosen by the SDN Book Club as their September book.
